Cards serve the purpose of an indoor game played on the basis of skill and chance. Playing cards provide us with the entertainment and fun while we stay indoors to avoid hot weather or a rainy season. There is no point of getting bored while playing cards, since there are many games associated with it such as hearts, solitaire, etc. All such games require only a deck of 52 cards. This set of 52 cards consists of four suits that are diamonds, clubs, spades, and hearts. The joker is one of the playing cards in the deck. The concept or the idea behind its origination came from the United States during the time of civil war. The Joker card was included in the deck as a trump card. It had to be played in the Euchre game. Since that time, this card has been incorporated into other various card games also serving the purpose of a wild card. In the French pack, this card is distinct and unique in a way that it does not possess a standard look that is famous all over the industry.
Appearance of the Joker card:
Many set of cards does not have Joker possessing the corner index sign, and those which do have, mostly have a solid five-pointed star or maybe a star resting inside a circle. Some cards have a ‘J’ written on the corner while others have ‘JOKER’ inscribed. Similar to the sports trading cards, joker cards are usually prized by the collectors. It is often associated to the Fool in the decks of Tarot and Tarock since many similarities could be seen in relation to their function in the game and the appearance.
Joker’s Role in the Game of Cards:
There are mainly two joker cards present in the 52 set of cards. Its function and role differs greatly. There are games of cards that entirely omit or neglect this card. This is the reason why it is often used as a substitute for the damaged or a lost card. On the other hand, games like Euchre consider Joker as an important card. Usually, it is considered as a wild card, and hence has the power to represent other cards as well during the game. It can be useful as well as harmful due to its authority. It is wild in the Poker game while the highest trump in the game of Euchre. However, there is a game called Old Maid played by the children. In the game, the Joker card is a representation of a Maid due to which it is usually eliminated or avoided while playing the game. Different games have different uses of the Joker card. For example, it is wild in Canasta and Gin Rummy, beats all other cards in War, deuce in Daihinmin, a skip card in Crazy Eights, and have two functions in the game of Spades. It is the lowest ranked card in Double King Pede.
